The City That Never Sleeps Meets The Maurice Lacroix Aikon Collection

Summer in the City, Maurice Lacroix’s AIKON Collection celebrates hot days and nights in the concrete jungle.

Back in the 1990s, Maurice Lacroix had a watch called the Calypso. It had a rugged but highly finished look that fit in well with the timepieces that were at the vanguard of that decade.

The quartz-powered Calyspso was a big hit amongst watch fans at the time, but collectors’ tastes changed, and their affections have turned to mechanical movements.

In 2016, Maurice Lacroix updated the Calypso and made the design more modern and renamed it the AIKON. Again, fans loved the look, but longed to see a mechanical caliber. Maurice Lacroix listened, and this year introduced a collection of automatic three handers and chronographs.

With the automatic movement, the AIKON has everything an enthusiast loves: good value for the money, impressive wrist presence and versatility. The AIKON Automatics were introduced earlier this year with an epic, multi-city treasure hunt tagged #ChaseYourWatch. We’re here to help you find your favorite by sharing a list of treasured New York City AIKON appropriate destinations.

Yankee Stadium/Citi Field

New York is a baseball town. Whether you wear the navy, white, and grey of the New York Yankees or the orange and blue of the Mets, with the textured blue dial of the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Automatic you will have all your bases covered.

Design-wise, this sporty chic timepiece can also take you from the ballpark to the boardroom. The big difference in design from previous versions of the Aikon is that the dial now has a grid-like Clou de Paris texture (before it featured a garage-door style recessed stripe look).

There are also refinements to the classic Aikon case. Maurice Lacroix has ditched the crown guards to make the silhouette cleaner (a screw-down crown keeps the watch water resistant to 200m). And the hands have been stretched out and slimmed down to further dress up the look of this timepiece.

Club Macanudo at the St. Cloud Rooftop

New York loves its rooftop bars. They are the perfect place to find cool breezes (and fine cocktails) on hot summer nights. One of the finest aeries in Manhattan is the St. Cloud Rooftop at the Knickerbocker Hotel.

And within the St. Cloud is the Club Macanudo rooftop cigar lounge, a place where cigar enthusiasts can enjoy a smoke while taking in the breathtaking view of 42nd Street and Broadway.

The Maurice Lacroix AIKON Automatic comes in many versions, including the aforementioned blue dial or a black dial and with a leather strap or five link, stainless steel bracelet. (Both feature “Easy Change” quick release spring bars if you can’t make up your mind). But for a location like the Club Macanudo lounge, we like this version with a sophisticated silver dial and a tobacco brown leather strap. In New York, it’s all about the easy elegance.

The Federal Reserve Bank

New York is full of great restaurants, trendy boutiques, and amazing museums – but it is also one of the great financial centers of the world. If you want to see where the money is made, your first visit should be a free tour of the Federal Reserve Bank.

“The Fed” is housed in a stunning building based on the architecture of the Renaissance palaces of Florence. The tour takes visitors through an introduction to the banking system of the United States as well as a chance to visit the Gold Vault located five stories below street level.

Since it debuted in the 1990s, the AIKON collection has been prized by savvy collectors because these watches provide a highly finished, luxurious look at a price point that won’t break the bank. With its 44mm case, the new AIKON G Automatic Chronograph provides extra return on your investment with its precision movement providing the collateral to the attractive dial display.

Sleep No More

For a dark night, the McKittrick Hotel hosts the award-winning Sleep No More — an immersive, experiential take on Macbeth. This site-specific re-telling of Shakespeare’s tragedy is sort of like an edgy choose-your-own-adventure book come to life. Patrons wear masks as they move from room to room. Actors whisper in your ear. All in all, it’s the kind of experimental theatre you can only find in New York.

Another part of the experience is hanging out in the McKittrick’s Manderlay Bar before the show. But because entry is timed, you’ll want to check your watch, so you don’t miss your slot.
